New Legislation For Physical Therapy

Torn rotator cuff tendons, stiff necks, backache, sprained ankles and total knee replacements are just some of the conditions ailing people who visit Columbia Physical Therapy. The staff and patients at the Valatie office are celebrating 16 years in Columbia County while the East Greenbush office marked their 20th year in Rensselaer County.

A recent change in state legislation that affects consumers of physical therapy is that you can now access physical therapy directly without waiting for a referral or prescription from a physician or other provider. Prior to November 2006, you needed to secure a referral to receive PT treatment. New York was the 43rd state to change their laws and allow the choice of direct access to physical therapy. The majority of patients will be referred by their doctor especially if you had surgery however there are many cases where you might simply need an update of an exercise program or manual therapy techniques for stiffness or pain. The therapist must refer you to the appropriate provider if their examination and review of your history reveal you are in need of additional medical intervention or if PT is not appropriate. Just as you can receive services from a massage therapist or personal trainer now you can save time and money by seeing the physical therapist of your choice. The NYS Education Department has set forth specific regulations pertaining to the new legislation. For additional information, contact Doreen Frank @ Doreen@columbiapt.com or 286-3990.
