It is well known that exercise and physical activity are important in the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Doreen Frank, physical therapist from Columbia Physical Therapy, P.C. was invited to the Diabetes Education Fair held at the Desmond this past month.
She emphasized the benefits of exercise for people with diabetes. "Those who commit to regular exercise find they improve their glucose levels and can sometimes decrease the use of medications. Exercise naturally reduces body fat and blood pressure while improving carbohydrate metabolism and overall strength and balance." Physical therapists design a customized program for people with medical issues. Learning which exercises to do and which to avoid is a benefit of having a PT familiar with diabetes formulate your program. People with diabetes are at increased risk of a frozen shoulder or carpal tunnel syndrome. There's no doubt that a person with diabetes will feel better with regular exercise.
