Columbia Physical Therapist Awarded Extra Certification

Gina Mastrianni, of Columbia Physical Therapy, PC has become certified as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association Certification Commission. The CSCS certification is designed for professionals who design and implement strength and conditioning programs for athletes. Mastrianni passed a written exam that consists of two sections, scientific foundations and practical /applied questions. The combination of her degree in Physical Therapy and an added credential in strength and conditioning raises the quality and safety of the strength training and conditioning she assists with. She earned her BS/MS in Physical Therapy from Russell Sage College in 2000 and immediately joined the staff of Columbia Physical Therapy in East Greenbush and Valatie.

Mastrianni immediately applied her knowledge and skills this past summer when she assisted Ron Annis, certified athletic trainer and also a certified strength and conditioning specialist, in the summer camp he runs for middle and high school students. The Speed, Strength and Power camp focuses on keeping the students in shape during their school vacation. Mastrianni explains, " They are better prepared for their fall sports and armed to avoid early injuries due to deconditioning." If there is an injury, when Mastrianni sees them at the Columbia Physical Therapy offices, they have a speedier recovery then those who did not regularly work out.

As a physical therapist, Mastrianni spends much of her day teaching exercises. She is a good role model since she has kept regular exercise an important part of her life since her days as a high school track athlete. She has a winning way with people when she persuades them to make exercise a routine part of their day. "No matter the age or present condition, as soon as you start exercise, the benefits will be noted." Says Mastrianni.
